Small Doses, Big Differences: A Reflection on the Olympia Psychedelic Society’s Year-End Event

As the year drew to a close, the Olympia Psychedelic Society (OPS) hosted a thought-provoking event titled "Small Doses, Big Differences: Understanding Low and Microdosing." This gathering provided a unique platform for community members, enthusiasts, and professionals to explore the nuanced practice of low and microdosing—a method gaining attention for its profound, subtle benefits. Below, we reflect on key insights shared during this impactful event.

Subperceptual or Should I Feel Something? One of the foundational themes discussed was the concept of subperceptual dosing—the practice of taking doses so low that no hallucinogenic effects are felt. As presenter Matt Metzger eloquently stated, “This medicine is a lubricant for the journey of life.” Rather than inducing an altered state, microdosing fosters a gentle shift in awareness, helping individuals develop a new relationship with the Self (capital S) and create lasting, meaningful change.

Reported Benefits: What Can Microdosing Do for You? Participants shared practical evidence and research-backed findings on the potential benefits of microdosing, which include:

  • Increased Energy and Cognition: Many reported enhanced focus and productivity.

  • Improved Concentration and Stress Management: Microdosing appears to help manage daily pressures with greater ease.

  • Boosted Creativity and Spiritual Awareness: The practice fosters fresh perspectives and a sense of connection.

Safety was also a key topic. The presenters emphasized the importance of understanding dosages, including the low risk of addiction and the safety profile of microdosing, which, when practiced responsibly, does not pose significant physical risks.

Protocols and Finding Your Sweet Spot A central takeaway was the importance of protocols and intentionality. Key approaches discussed included:

  • Start Low, Go Slow: This adage underscores the need for patience and mindfulness when beginning microdosing.

  • Popular Protocols:

    • Fadiman Protocol: One day on, two days off.

    • Stamets Protocol: Four days on, three days off.

    • Intuitive Schedule: Adapting dosing schedules to personal needs, especially for those tapering off medications like benzodiazepines.

Grinding dry materials into powder to homogenize potency and meticulous record-keeping were recommended to ensure consistent, intentional dosing. Integrating practices like journaling, meditation, gratitude exercises, and mindfulness further amplifies the benefits.

Navigating Side Effects and Discomfort Microdosing is not without challenges. Some shared experiences are observed as:

  • Anxiety and Irritability

  • Tiredness or Light Emotional States

  • Headaches

Rather than viewing these side effects as barriers, participants were encouraged to see them as opportunities to sit with discomfort and cultivate resilience. As Matt Metzger emphasized, microdosing is “not a medicine you have to suffer through,” but a supportive tool for growth and self-discovery.

Claiming Sovereignty: Be in the Driver’s Seat A recurring message was the importance of personal sovereignty. Microdosing is about making intentional, informed choices to reclaim control over one’s life. Participants were reminded to prioritize holistic well-being by maintaining good sleep hygiene, nourishing the body, and allowing time to process emotions and experiences.

Building a society that embraces emotional states—both high and low—was highlighted as a critical step toward collective healing and growth.

Stacking Practices for Enhanced Benefits The event also delved into “stacking,” or combining microdosing with complementary supplements and practices. Suggestions included pairing microdosing with lion’s mane mushrooms and lemon for cognitive and emotional support. Avoiding certain foods or supplements that might interfere with the process was also discussed.

Community and Education: Moving Forward Together The OPS event underscored the importance of education and community support. Attendees were encouraged to:

  • Support organizations like the Key Peninsula Psychedelic Society, which leads in promoting safe and sacred psychedelic practices.

  • Approach microdosing with intention and reverence, recognizing it as a tool for self-improvement rather than a quick fix.

Final Thoughts "Small Doses, Big Differences" highlighted the transformative potential of microdosing when approached mindfully. By embracing intentional protocols, cultivating personal sovereignty, and fostering community dialogue, individuals can unlock a path to greater creativity, resilience, and spiritual connection. As we move into the new year, let us carry forward the wisdom shared at this event—not just as individuals, but as part of a society striving for holistic well-being and emotional harmony.
