Oxmul Coffee: A Sip of Belizean Sustainability and Tradition

Nestled next to Alejo Panti National Park, Oxmul Coffee offers more than just a rich brew—it tells the story of community, conservation, and culture. Guided by Jason, we learned how this remarkable coffee farm balances agricultural innovation with ecological preservation. From its humble beginnings to producing its first harvest, Oxmul embodies the Mayan spirit of sustainability. Belize has its secrets waiting for you to discover. Also Oxmul is pronounced "Ah-Sh-Mul".

The Genesis of a Dream

Oxmul Coffee began as a dream for James Mesh and his family, who questioned why coffee wasn't being grown and produced locally in Belize. What started as an experiment with just three coffee plants quickly turned into a passion for crafting a Belizean-made coffee product. Within 2.5 years, their plants bore their first coffee beans, sparking excitement and the beginning of a journey that would lead to the creation of Oxmul Coffee.

From Tree to Cup

The entire coffee production process is carried out by the Mesh family in their hometown, ensuring the integrity and authenticity of their product. The coffee fruits are harvested between November and February, and each step—extracting the beans, sun-drying, shelling, roasting, grinding, and packaging—is handled with care. The coffee is grown organically under shade trees, reflecting a commitment to both environmental sustainability and quality craftsmanship.

The farm spans 27 acres, carefully balanced to include agricultural plots, family homes, and untouched forest jungle. This deliberate choice highlights a commitment to conservation, with the jungle providing essential resources like hardwood for building, wildlife habitats, and food to sustain the families, stewards of the land.

Jason explained how Oxmul Coffee was born out of trial and perseverance. Starting in 2011, they experimented with growing coffee without deforestation. The first 13 pounds of coffee harvested marked a small but significant victory. Today, Oxmul is a fully registered business, producing enough coffee to sustain ten families while preserving the environment.

A Tribute to History

The name 'Oxmul' pays homage to the original Yucatec Maya name of San Antonio in the Cayo District, where the coffee is grown. This connection to the region’s heritage is a vital part of the brand’s identity, embodying a sense of place and cultural pride.

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword here—it’s a way of life. Ninety-seven percent of their packaging materials are recycled, and their farming techniques emphasize harmony with nature. As I sipped their unique coffee (and wine tasting in celebration of our communion), I realized this wasn’t just a drink; it was a symbol of resilience and resourcefulness.

Challenges and Vision

While small businesses face many challenges, the Mesh family remains focused on their goal of providing organic coffee to the people of Belize. Their dedication to their craft and their gratitude for the support of the Belizean community exemplify the resilience and perseverance needed to transform a dream into reality.

Oxmul Coffee embodies eco-tourism at its best, offering visitors a chance to engage with the land and its history while supporting local families. It’s a reminder that luxury and sustainability can coexist beautifully.
