Wellness doesn't have to be complicated or expensive—it can be as simple as combining a few kitchen ingredients for a nourishing, rejuvenating ritual. During a trip to Belize, I was inspired by the luxurious wellness treatments at the retreat I stayed in, where bodywork services such as cappuccino body scrubs, coconut milk baths infused with flower essences, and full-body Maya mud wraps were offered. These treatments left me feeling both refreshed and deeply connected to my body.
One of the highlights of my stay was the cappuccino body scrub, which used sugar, coffee, and chocolate to provide nutrients and hydration for the skin. Before leaving, I had a wonderful conversation with the host about the benefits of these natural ingredients—sugar and coffee exfoliate the skin while delivering antioxidants, and chocolate nourishes with its rich nutrients. This conversation sparked the idea to create my own homemade body scrub, inspired by the simplicity of the ingredients used at the retreat.
When I returned home, I reached out to my Ally Flowers, who has crafted a beautiful line of body care products. She affirmed that a homemade sugar-coffee scrub is not only beneficial but also a great DIY project to try. I decided to experiment with my own DIY creation.
Armed with coffee grounds from my Belizean coffee stash, fair-trade raw cane turbinado sugar, unrefined organic coconut sugar, and a splash of coconut oil, I crafted a simple yet luxurious scrub. Below, I’m sharing two recipe options that you can try at home—each designed to exfoliate, nourish, and detoxify your skin.

DIY Coffee-Sugar Body Scrub Recipe
Energizing Coffee-Sugar Scrub
Ingredients:
1/2 cup coffee grounds (fresh or used, dried)
1/2 cup raw cane sugar or turbinado sugar
2 tablespoons coconut oil (melted but not hot)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, for a soothing aroma)
Instructions: Mix the coffee grounds and sugar in a bowl. Add the coconut oil and vanilla extract (if using) and stir until combined. Apply to damp skin in gentle circular motions. Rinse off with warm water and pat dry.
Benefits:
This scrub gently exfoliates dead skin cells, boosts circulation, and delivers antioxidants to the skin, leaving it smooth, firm, and hydrated.
Coconut-Chocolate Detox Scrub
Ingredients:
1/4 cup coffee grounds
1/4 cup unrefined organic coconut sugar
2 tablespoons cacao powder (unsweetened)
2 tablespoons fresh quizzed orange juice
A few drops of lavender or orange essential oil (optional, for relaxation or invigoration)
Instructions: Combine the coffee grounds, coconut sugar, and cacao powder in a bowl. Stir in the orange juice and essential oil (if using) until the mixture forms a paste. Massage onto damp skin, letting the natural ingredients detoxify and nourish. Rinse off in the shower and enjoy your glowing, soft skin.
Benefits:
The coconut sugar and cacao work together to exfoliate and hydrate, while the coffee stimulates circulation and detoxification. The added essential oils and orange essence enhance the sensory experience, making this scrub a spa-like treatment.
